Who we are
Part of ESEA Sisters, we organise monthly hikes and gatherings in nature for women, trans, and non-binary folks of East and South East Asian heritage. With lived experience of racial and gender-based violence, we are learning to reconnect with our bodies, nature and each other, one step at a time.
Why we started
Many of us have experienced street harassment or have been made to feel unwelcome in the public space. To change this, we started organising regular gatherings in nature, as a way to develop a network of mutual support.
We are committed to developing ways to collectively challenge and unlearn carceral anti-racism practices, while integrating trauma-informed approaches into how we organise and learn with each other.
What to expect
- We structure our sessions in ways that encourage participants to respect and care for the routes we explore and people we meet
- These regular gatherings offer opportunities for us to collectively challenge colonial legacies that often underlie conventional approaches to relating to nature as well
- As we develop deeper connections and capacity within the group, we also work with fellow QTBIPOC collaborators to build solidarity and recognise how our struggles are products of systemic oppression
How we gather
- For our nature walks to run as smoothly as possible, we try to determine an appropriate ratio of walkers-to-organisers for each walk, based on the complexity, terrain and activities involved. This is why spaces are limited
- Staying true to ESEA Sisters’ core values and as a peer-led collective, we aim to keep our events accessible to all. With the support from the Edge Fund and generous contributions from our community, we are able to offer travel bursaries to members, get in touch via [email protected] to find out more
- We do not share details of the route on social media for safety reasons. Details of the route and where/when we meet will be shared directly with you closer to the date of the walk
